![]() ![]() Sword boosts the damage inflicted on enemies. For Health, you can increase longevity which will come in handy as the levels become more complex and difficult. These elements focus on Health, Sword, and Magic. The RPG elements are another area that not only provides another layer of complexity to the game, but helps balance out the flow of the gameplay. As levels are completed, other areas and places are revealed. For the player, this firmly and effectively establishes that feeling of mystery and exploration. Unlike other platformers which are broken into different levels, Swordigo is one giant world presented at your footsteps for discovery. Something that sets Swordigo apart from the typical platformer is how the game is presented. From this area, players can also keep track of quests which are presented as conversations. Swordigo has an intuitive inventory system to keep track of acquired items as well as RPG elements. The button placement is customizable, and you’ll likely want to move the hack and slash button away a bit from the jump button which can inadvertently be hit. ![]() The control scheme is pretty straightforward with left and right buttons for movement and action buttons for such things as jumping, sword hacking and slashing, moving/holding items, and conjuring magic spells. Of course, the hack and slash nature of the battle scenes make Swordigo even better. Whether it’s the isolation of an abandoned castle or simply the wind blowing through the trees, Swordigo is one of charm and allure. Running this on an iPad, the animation is smooth with good sense of depth. From lighting effects to textures, each of the environments is filled with details that help the game stand on its own. Presented in 2.5D, the world in Swordigo has a unique charm and allure that takes on a life of its own. Throughout the adventure, quests and battles will take you through worlds where locating treasure is just the tip of the peasant iceberg.Īn effective platformer is often able to create a world that not only engages the player, but also provides a lasting effect. Set in the village of Cairnwood, the main character in Swordigo is an apprentice who finds himself thrust into the role of hero after his master is killed by the Corruptors, an evil legion intent on conquest. Filled with puzzles, quests and of course battles, Swordigo is an impressive game incorporated in a vast world with a good dose of RPG elements. If you’re nostalgic for the side scrolling platforms of old or waiting around for the next installment of Kingdom Hearts, play this game right now! However, if you’ve never experienced any games like this, but you’re looking for a solid game on iOS that controls well on a touchscreen and provides hours of addictive gameplay, you should pick up Swordigo. What would you get if you combined the adventure and exploration of Zelda with the arcade antics of Mario Bros? You’d likely get Touch Foo’s Swordigo, a wonderfully fun and surprisingly deep platformer that ranks as one of the best of the genre to date on the iOS. Well-executed gameplay and puzzling challenges, not to mention an excellent soundtrack, are what really kept me playing, not an interest in what was going to happen next to my character. Set in a fantasy world, you play as an adventurer seeking to save his village from the corrupters looking to destroy it. ![]() It was certainly present, but a bit generic. My biggest complaint with Swordigo is the story. So it makes sense that the graphics would reflect that. After all, this game is super reminiscent of the side scrolling and roleplaying games of old. But slowly, the art style and graphics of the game really grew on me. The game itself doesn’t look much better than Final Fantasy 7 did on the PS One. So when I started playing Swordigo, I wasn’t totally knocked out. I’m sure I’m not the only one whom, after playing Infinity Blade on my iPhone, has had pretty high expectations of any other games’ graphics. Or if you’re more of a physical attacker, purchase some sword upgrades and focus on leveling your attack power. Prefer magic over physical attacks? Level up your spells and health first, and purchase armor and potions to keep your HP high. Players can level up their attack and magical powers as they level, allowing for a customizable gameplay experience. Along with beating enemies and bosses to a pulp with your abilities, players use spells and physical attacks to solve puzzles and move further through the ever expanding world. At first you’ll just be hacking and slashing enemies with your sword, but soon you’ll acquire magic. Touch controls usually drive me crazy, but Swordigo controls smoothly on the iPhone. But for good reason, as Swordigo combines all the things we loved about the great games of old and brings them out our childhoods and into the present. Swordigo is a side-scrolling RPG platformer that many gamers will nostalgically equate to Zelda, Kingdom Hearts, or Final Fantasy. ![]()
